CASHCast: Ajay Devgan, Zayed Khan, Riteish Deshmukh, Esha Deol, Shamita Shetty and othersDirector: Anubhav SinhaRating
Even by the illogical standards of most heist capers — where things always go like clockwork for the protagonists —Anubhav Sinha’s Cash is particularly idiotic. With so many characters, with names like Uncle and Doctor, floating around, it’s hard to figure out who is doing what and why at the centre of the caper set in South Africa, are three large and very expensive diamonds, which Doctor (Ajay Devgan) has to acquire for gangster Angad (Sunil Shetty), who has some old scores to settle with Uncle (bemused looking unknown actor), and his gal Aditi (Dia Mirza).
Working with Doctor, are Danny (Zayed Khan) and Lucky (Riteish Deskmukh) who can’t stand each other because they are in love with the same girl, Pooja (Esha Deol). For some reason, Doctor, puts them on the job of stealing a painting from a museum.
Then there’s a cache of marked notes, with which security expect Shanaya (Shamita Shetty) wants to catch the diamond thieves. She couldn’t be too bright, since Doctor lives in her house, pretending to be a writer called Karan, and he is a criminal wanted by cops in "15 countries.
"The actors, all toned with washboard abs, picnic in South Africa and probably don’t try to make sense of what’s going on. Again, for no reason, Sinha makes liberal use of animation-in his cartoon version, Riteish’s hair turns a fiery blond.
Never mind the bloopers, the film isn’t much fun to watch, Ritesh gets a few comic "kabaddi" scenes, in a film quite devoid of humour. After seeing sophisticated stunts in Hindi films like Dhoom 2, does anyone get impressed with cars turning turtle and chases on water skis? The credits over the foot-tapping title number is the highpoint of the film, and things go downhill after that.
