An earthquake measuring 7.9-magnitude hit western coast Indonesia’s Sumatra island on Sept. 12, 2007. The powerful earthquake triggered warnings of a potentially destructive tsunami for much of the Indian Ocean region.
The undersea quake hit at about 6:10 p.m. in Sumatra and badly damaged buildings along the coast. There was a series of aftershocks, the strongest was 6.6-magnitude and it triggered a second tsunami alert for Indonesia. At least seven people were killed and about 100 injured as reported at 11:30 p.m. local time.
A wave of up to 9 feet was reported to have struck Padang and Bengkulu about 20 minutes after the initial quake. Several buildings in Padang and Bengkulu were damaged and collapsed.
The quake could be felt in neighboring Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand, and also caused tall buildings in these countries to sway. So far no injury was reported from these three countries
