A 66-year-old psychology professor at the University of Manitoba, Michael LeBow who lost his bracelet when he was swimming in Lake Tahoe during a family camping trip when he was 13. Just recently, 53 years later, he received a long-distance call from a man informing him that his lost bracelet in a Nevada lake was found but he thought he was being fooled.
He didn’t realize the American man, George Miskovsky was talking about the lost bracelet until he described the engravings words “Mike LeBow” on the front and “Love Mom, Dad, Julie and Esty” on the back of the silver bracelet. The bracelet was a gift from his father, Bill, who wore it during the Second World War.
Michael LeBow said they couldn’t find it when he lost the bracelet, “I felt terrible. We looked for it and looked for it but couldn’t find it,” he added, “Years went by and I forgot about it.”
George Miskovsky was combing Lake Tahoe with his metal detector - his favourite pastime - this past summer when he found something buried in the sand in three metres of water.
He took it home and searched “Mike LeBow”, “Julie” and “Esty” on the Internet and found a website for a book written by LeBow and dedicated to his sisters, Julie and Esty. “Once I found that I pretty much knew I found the person,” Miskovsky said. With the help of his co-worker Bill Potts, he found LeBow’s contact information.
“George likes to do this because he hopes he can find something and return it to its owner,” Potts said. “It’s a special thrill when it’s a family heirloom.”
Miskovsky didn’t want any reward but Potts asked LeBow to write the story about the bracelet in his next book, LeBow agreed it and said he will dedicate the book to the pair.
“It’s a great story,” LeBow said. “I told my class to never lose hope.”
