Dutt back in jail after getting copy of judgement
JAIL LIFE AGAIN: Sanjay Dutt had spent close to a month in Pune’s Yerawada Prison in August following his conviction.
Sanjay Dutt was back in jail on Monday after he surrendered to the court on receiving a copy of the judgement from the Special Mumbai TADA Court, which had earlier convicted him in the 1993 serial blasts case.
Dutt, who was intially held at the Arthur Road Jail in Mumbai for a few hours, was later shifted to Pune’s Yerawada Jail. Dutt’s lawyers will now approach the Supreme Court for a regular bail, but till then Sanjay is expected to spend at least a couple of weeks in prison.
Dutt had been granted interim bail by the Supreme Court following his appeal against the TADA court judgement. The SC had directed him to surrender before the TADA court once he gets a copy of his judgement.
The TADA court had already handed over copies of its judgement to 13 other convicts, including 10 who have been awarded death sentence.
The court has sentenced Dutt to six years rigorous imprisonment under the Arms Act for illegal possession of an AK-56 assault rifle and a pistol. In August, the 48-year-old actor had spent close to a month in Pune’s Yerawada Prison after being sentenced on July 31.
The Special Public Prosecutor in the case, Ujjwal Nikam, said he would advise the prosecuting agency, the CBI, to appeal against Dutt’s acquittal under the stringent Terrorism and Disruptive Activities (Prevention) Act (TADA).
"After reading in detail the judgement copy, the agency will decide whether to appeal in the Supreme Court against Dutt’s acquittal under TADA," Nikam said on Monday.
