NO CHILL PILL: Health practitioners are worried as teenagers may be choosing to use it pill irresponsibly.
A new emergency contraceptive pill from Cipla meant for married couples has become the new mantra for the teenage population.
“Many teenagers come to buy it,” says a chemist.
This has several health practitioners worried because of the teenagers who may be choosing to use it irresponsibly.
“Out of 20 patients a day I get two to three such cases. And also phone calls from 16 years to 25 years,” says Senior Gynaecologist, Max, Dr Anuradha.
Advertised by Cipla as an emergency option for married couples, the emergency I-pill has nevertheless captured a larger market - sexually active teenagers.
It is the only morning-after pill in India that needs to be taken only once within 72 hours of intercourse, to prevent pregnancy. But mental health experts warn of the negative fallout, when the users aren’t necessarily mature enough to process what they’re doing.
“It interferes with the biological process, there’s guilt and no information sharing,” says Adolescent Psychiatrist, Dr Amit Sen.

I-pill provides no protection against HIV infection. And being a hormonal drug there are health hazards for teenagers.
“There is irregular bleeding, missing periods, late pregnancies and long term health risks,” says Dr Anuradha.
When contacted, Cipla refused to comment on the issue. But while some doctors feel that regulation is the need of the hour.
“There are so many drugs available off the counter. The government needs to stop this,” says Dr Anuradha.
But other experts point out that there could actually be a positive side as well.
“It’s better than the pain of teenage abortion,” says Dr Amit Sen.
