Eating a Mediterranean diet and regular exercise can help people to live longer, according to two new studies.
One study of more than 500,000 men and women found those who followed a Mediterranean diet (eating lots of fresh fish, fruit, vegetables and whole grains) lived longer - they cut the risk of dying early by a fifth.
In another study, those who took 30 minutes of moderate exercise most days cut their risk of dying young by more than a quarter.
Both studies found that smokers and the obese still benefit from a Mediterranean diet and regular exercise even if they do not lose weight or quit cigarettes.
Studies are published in the Archives of Internal Medicine.
