Kabhi Kabhi’ (1976) is one of Yash Chopra’s many memorable films of the 1970s. Known for its complex plot, the film is a romantic story of two lovers -Amit Malhotra and Pooja Khanna. They split up and then meet again as friends some two decades later. There is an interesting sub plot concerning their next generation, which makes ‘Kabhi Kabhi’ more complex. The story has a happy ending though- with the unrequited lovers meeting again, following a dramatic chain of events. Rumors have it that Yash Chopra came up with the concept of this film while he was reading a poem by Sahir Ludhianvi (lyricist of this film). With its huge star cast of Amitabh Bachhan, Shashi Kapoor, Rishi Kapoor among others, this film proved to be a huge box office hit. The title song of this film is very popular even today.
Amit (Amitabh Bachhan) who is a poet is deeply in love with Pooja (Raakhee Gilzar). The couple decides to marry. However, owing to the pressure of her father, Pooja reluctantly marries Vijay (Shashi Kapoor). Amit fails to come to terms with this reality and adrifts even from the poetry. He however ties the nuptial knot with Anjali (Waheeda Rehman). Years pass by and Vicky (Rishi Kapoor), son of Pooja and Vijay, falls in love with Pinky (Neetu Singh), the daughter of Shobha (Simi Garewal) and Dr R.P Kapoor (Parikshat Sahni). The story takes a bizarre new turn with the sudden disclosure by Shobha that Pinky is not her daughter.
This sets the story in motion towards the climax as Pinky goes after finding her real mother. We later come to know that Anjali is the real mother of Pinky. Sweetie (Naseem banu), Anjali and Amit’s daughter, now comes in the picture and she, finding her mother loving Pinky more than her, becomes jealous. The sub plot reaches its culmination after Vicky comes and meets the sisters. A love triangle follows and these dramatic chain of events bring Amit and Pooja together again. The two lovers thus meet again after a long time but this time only as friends. The film was shot in Kashmir. The entire crew stayed together during the making of this film, the on screen couple- Rishi Kapoor and Neetu Singh really fell in love with each other. Today theirs is the most successful marriage story in Bollywood.
