With his Mallika Sherawat starrer, Masquerade - a political satire -shelved, filmmaker Kundan Shah has decided to make a sequel to his cult political satire, Jaane Bhi Do Yaaron (1983).
With the Hera Pheri series and Welcome producer Firoz Nadiadwala producing it, Shah intends to maintain the same star-cast as in the original.
The original starred Naseeruddin Shah, Ravi Baswani, Neena Gupta, Bhakti Barve, Pankaj Kapur and Satish Shah in pivotal roles. Shah told us, “I am presently giving finishing touches to my script of the JBDY sequel. I definitely want to maintain the same cast. It is again going to be a political satire. I am going to talk to my actors once I am completely done with the script.”
With Bhakti Barve having passed away a few years back in a road accident, which actress does he have in mind as her replacement? “I have zeroed down on few names. But I am yet to speak to them so it will be too early to take their names.” Shah says.
Talking about the Masquerade fiasco, Shah says, “The film has been shelved. The story revolved around the lead character played by Mallika, who makes a long journey from being a prostitute to being the Chief Minister. There were differences between the producer and Mallika Sherawat. I still plan to make the film though as the script is ready. I would definitely love to work with Mallika.”
Jaane Bhi Do Yaaron (1983)
Considered one of the best political satire’s ever attempted on Indian screen, Jaane Bhi Do Yaaron was the story of two friends played by Naseer and Ravi Baswani, attempting to start-up their own photo studio but in due course coming across shady dealings, corruption and murder involving ministers and builders. The rest of the film is about how they decide to fight and bring the guilty to light and what it leads them to.
