Deepika Padukone can’t choose between her superstar co-stars, Shah Rukh Khan and Akshay Kumar. But she does hope to be the next Akki!
Before we watch her on screen in a double role, romancing Akshay, in Chandni Chowk To China, the actress talks to Rajul Hegde about her upcoming film.
What is Chandni Chowk to China all about?
It is the journey of a chef (played by Akshay) from Delhi to China. It is a story of mistaken identities and love.
Tell us about your look in the film.
Jai, a designer from New York, designed my look in the film. This is his first Hindi film and it was very challenging for him. My look ranged from action to traditional.
Credit also goes to (make-up artist) Mallika, who completed my look. I’ve got positive reactions for my look. I will be keeping this look till the film releases next month.
What kind of training did you have to undergo for the action sequences?
Trainers from Hong Kong (one of them has worked in films like Kill Bill and Matrix) trained me for about six months. The training was intense -- eight hours a day. But it was worth it, especially when you are shooting in a place like China. Rohan (Sippy, producer) would come on the sets whenever action sequences were shot to make sure that I was still alive for the next day’s shoot (laughs)!
Did you get injured while performing any stunt?
There are risks involved in action sequences. I have never been part of an action film before so I had no clue what was involved. I injured my ankle thrice at the same place. But this is a part of our profession and we must be prepared.
Tell us about the experience of working with Akshay Kumar.
I have learnt a lot from him. He taught me that action was not about tensing your body but treating it like dance -- one had to be graceful. He has done some amazing action sequences. He is a wonderful dancer too. I’d like to believe that main next Akshay Kumar hoon!
Who, according to you, is a better actor: Shah Rukh Khan or Akshay?
I love to watch both their films. Both are big in their own way. They are extremely hard working and have been here for years. Since I have barely completed one year, I have no right to comment on them. Both of them are exceptional to work with and most importantly, I got a chance to learn a lot from them.
