With several big films releasing, There’s much to expect from Bollywood this year. There’s a kung-fu comedy, a few thrillers and as usual, plenty of masala entertainers.
Chandni Chowk to China: India’s first Kung-fu comedy stars Deepika Padukone as an Indo-Chinese princess and Akshay Kumar plays an action-crazy chef. The film promises some great music, the crowded streets of China and unlimited laughs. After the failure of Salaam-e-Ishq, director Nikhil Advani is counting heavily on this one, which releases on January 16.
Delhi 6: Rang De Basanti director Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra’s much-awaited film is supposedly based on the director’s life in old Delhi. The film stars Abhishek Bachchan and Sonam Kapoor and releases on February 20.
Luck By Chance: Farhan Akhtar’s directorial debut Dil Chahta Hai was very well-received and his acting debut Rock On created waves last year. So will his second film, sister Zoya’s directorial debut Luck By Chance create the same euphoria? We will have to wait till January 30 to find out. The film boasts of an ensemble cast of Farhan, Konkona Sen Sharma, Juhi Chawla, Rishi Kapoor, Isha Sharwani, Dimple Kapadia and Hrithik Roshan. It revolves around the important role Luck plays in the fulfillment of one’s Bollywood dreams.
3 Idiots: Based on Chetan Bhagat’s bestselling novel Five Point Someone, this flick brings together Aamir Khan and Kareena Kapoor for the first time. Expect a laugh riot with Munnabhai director Rajkumar Hirani at the helm of affairs. The film hits screens in the summer.
Kites: Hrithik Roshan, Kangana Ranaut and Mexican bombshell Barbara will scorch the screen with their sizzling chemistry in this romantic thriller. Rumoured to be based on Woody Allen’s drama Match Point, the film is directed by Anurag Basu. You have to wait till May to catch this intensely passionate drama.
London Dreams: After her blockbuster debut alongside Aamir in Ghajini, Asin will now be wooed by Salman Khan and Ajay Devgan in Vipul Shah’s musical. It is a love triangle with all of them playing Rockstars. Shot across London and Paris, it will hit Indian screens in May. Salman has had four flops this year, hope his luck changes this time around.
Kambakht Ishq: Starring Kareena Kapoor and Akshay Kumar, with special appearances by Hollywood biggies like Sylvester Stallone, Denise Richards and Beyonce Knowles, the film looks like a complete masala entertainer. Kareena plays a model and Akhsay plays a stuntman. Bebo will sport a healthier look and a bikini in the film shot across LA, Mumbai, Italy and France. Sajid Nadiadwala has produced the film which hits theatres in the summer.
Rensil D’Silva’s untitled film: This guy wrote the very powerful Rang De Basanti and now he is directing a terrorism based film for Dharma Productions. Vivek Oberoi plays a terrorist and Saif and Kareena play a Muslim couple in the film based in New York. The film hits theatres in the monsoons.
My Name is Khan: The trio of Kajol, Karan Johar and Shah Rukh Khan reunites for this film which is inspired by Tom Cruise-Dustin Hoffman starrer Rain Man. A Wednesday actor Aamir Bashir plays SRK’s brother in the film. SRK’s character Rizwan Khan suffers from Asperger’s Syndrome, which is a type of Autism. It deals with identity issues and discrimination that Muslims face in the States post 9/11 and is based on a true story of such a couple based in LA. It is set for a Diwali release.
Blue: This is the most expensive Bollywood film ever made. With a multi-star cast comprising Akshay Kumar, Sanjay Dutt, Katrina Kaif, Zayed Khan and a bikini-clad Lara Dutta, Blue is a thriller shot in the Bahamas and Thailand. AR Rahman has scored the music with Kylie Minogue lending some international appeal. This Anthony D’Souza directed and Ashtavinayak produced film hits theatres in July.
New York: After Kabul Express, Kabir Khan is back with New York starring Katrina Kaif, John Abraham and Neil Nitin Mukesh. It tells the story of how the lives of three friends changed post the 9/11 attacks in the US. It looks very promising and you have to wait till May to see it. Let’s hope it is not another turkey for YRF.
