British supermodel, Naomi Campbell, walked the Indian ramp for the first time in a fund-raiser show at the Lakme Fashion Week 2009 in Mumbai.
Merging fashion with a humanitarian cause, Campbell and New York-based hotelier, Vikram Chatwal , put together a show called 'Mai Mumbai' (I Am Mumbai), which saw the creme de la creme of the Indian and international fashion fraternity design clothes for an auction.
The proceeds of this auction, for which one can bid on eBay.com, would go into improving the city's medical infrastructure.
Chatwal, who spearheaded this philanthropic initiative, said several lives were lost in the 26/11 terror attacks due to inadequate medical transport.
"The funds will mostly be deployed to provide more ambulances. If this ever happens again, we know what do we do and how to prevent it," Mr. Chatwal told reporters.
'Mai Mumbai' boasted of a host of creations by Donna Karan, Versace, Swarovski, Roberto Cavalli, Vera Wang, Yves Saint Laurent, Oscar de la Renta, Louis Vuitton, Manolo Blahnik among others.
