A bevy of stars made their way to Bandra’s polling booths to cast their votes. Shah Rukh Khan flew down from South Africa -- where the Indian Premier League matches are currently on -- just to cast his vote. Wife Gauri Khan accompanied him to the polling booth.
Among the first were Aamir Khan and his wife Kiran Rao. Aamir also spoke to the media assembled, saying, "Manmohan Singh is not a weak prime minister." The actor especially cut short his holiday abroad to come down to Mumbai to vote. "I hope people have not taken this long holiday to go out of town," Kiran said. "Every citizen must come out and vote. It’s important to elect a keen candidate to work for the rights of poor people."
"For the first time, there was a huge public hue and cry after 26/11, and the home minister [R R Patil] and chief minister [Vilasrao Deshmukh] had to resign," John Abraham said. "That was the time we realised how powerful Indian democracy is."
"I’m very happy that many people have come out to vote in this heat," Rishi Kapoor says. "I didn’t get a voting card but yet I voted. The sad part about our democracy is that a lot of candidates are giving money to the poor people to vote. I want to tell the people to take money from them, but don’t vote for them."
"I look at the candidate and which party he belongs to before I vote," director Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra says. "These are the national elections. We should keep in mind the party that will rule at the centre, not at the state or local level. "After 26/11, there has been a change in attitude among the intelligent voters," he continues. "They know the power of votes. It’s sad that 74 percent of the people in Mumbai live in slums but the media is more interestied in high profile celebrities."
