To combat piracy, the makers of AGYAAT have decided to launch the DVDs of AGYAAT on the same day as the film’s theatrical release. This would be only in overseas market though while in India, the DVDs would arrive much later. This step has been taken to combat piracy that is a big threat to movies like AGYAAT that take time to grow in overseas territories, if released in theaters.
Says a source attached to the film, ’’For UTV Motion Pictures, the co-producers of AGYAAT, it made sense to release the film direct on DVDs. In any case, this is not an alien concept in the West where even the biggest of films find a place on the DVD shelves instead of silver screen. Most recently, even Morgan Freeman and Antonio Banderas starrer THICK AS THIEVES was released directly on home video.’’
While this Ram Gopal Varma film would enjoy a theatrical release in India and most likely Sri Lanka (since it has been shot there), in UK, USA and other major countries, the DVDs would hit the stands on 7th August itself. In fact the film has already been censored in UK.
’’It’s a good way to fight piracy’’, adds the source, ’’With online piracy becoming a way of life, it makes sense to have a film like AGYAAT available through official channels.’’
While in overseas, the home video will arrive under the UTV label, in India the music as well as video rights are held by T-Series which would be taking a normal course of releasing the film on DVD only after a few weeks.
