There was the usual media hype surrounding Amitabh Bachchan’s birthday. The actor not only celebrated his 67 birthday but also his 40 years in Hindi films. Director Ram Gopal Verma, who has directed him in three films so far, also decided to commemorate the actor’s birthday and his 40 years in the industry. On the occasion of the launch of his forthcoming film, ’Rann’, the director organized a little surprise for his leading actor, when he had 21 actors coming on stage to represent the 21 different characters that the actor has played down the years.
Each actor was dressed in clothes similar to the character and wore a mask of Bachchan’s face. Over the years, there have been many tributes paid to the actor. One of the greatest compliments paid to him should be the manner in which he has been imitated by every young and aspiring actor down the ages. Till quite a few years ago, almost everybody wanted to be another Amitabh Bachchan.
But he still remains the point of reference for many actors for the emotional intensity that he brought to his roles. His style of dialogue delivery and his legendary voice are by now a part of Hindi film history . And to think that this was a voice which was turned down by All India Radio, when the actor was struggling to get a foothold in the industry!
The men who were responsible for making him what he was, men like Mehmood, Prakash Mehra, Manmohan Desai and Hrishikesh Mukherjee are no more. As for his leading ladies, most are leading a settled married life, like Moushumi Chatterjee and Zeenat Aman or become a recluse like Raakhee.
Actress , Sharmila Tagore, Hema Malini and wife Jaya Bachchan are still around, dabbling in films now and then. But the actor powers on, still working with the same ferocity and passion as before. He may no longer be the angry young man, Vijay, but the desire to continue working on even more challenging films and characters remains his only wish.
