That Asin and Deepika are close friends is something that Asin has mentioned in several of her interviews and when the two appeared together on Farah Khan’s chat show, the world got a sneak peek into their friendship too. Alas, the film business is one full of insecurities and competitiveness and sadly it looks like this is one friendship which could not stand the test of time.
The story seems to be that while Asin had been approached to play the lead opposite Abhishek Bachchan in Ashutosh Gowariker’s ’Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Sey’, she had never been finalized in spite of the news floating around in the media. Then Ashu met Deepika, and things fell into place with her as she fit the character to the tee. All of a sudden, while recovering from her recent flop film, Asin received another jolt, this time of losing out on a coveted project to none other than her "friend" Deepika!
The film which is based on the Chittagong Uprising of 1930 is set to be shot in Goa and in spite of the luke warm response to his last film, ’What’s Your Raashee?’, there is no denying the fact that Gowariker remains one of the top three filmmakers in India, a director who took India to the top 5 at the Oscars with ’Lagaan’, a director who presented Shah Rukh Khan like an actor and not a star for the first time in his career in ’Swades’ and a director who swept all of last year’s Indian awards with ’Jodhaa Akbar’.
In fact the buzz among many was that had ’Jodhaa Akbar’ been sent as India’s official entry to the Oscar’s instead of ’Taare Zameen Par’, it would have surely made it to the top 5 again. With such a history, we can understand why Asin would be heartbroken at losing out on a chance to work with him.
It of course must have hurt her all the more that she has lost out to her "saheli" and apparently Asin has been further hurt by people saying that Deepika is a bigger star than Asin and hence it only made sense that she should feature opposite Abhishek in such a large scale project. Last we heard, Asin was trying to figure out where this sudden string of bad luck has emerged from.
