However, make sure you think about all the cons before you plan to include them in your staple diet.
We tell you what you need to look out for…
Loss of Nutrients
Contrary to popular belief, canned fruits and vegetables have lost most of their natural nutrients. This is due to the heating process that is used to preserve them.
According to Jayamala Singh, Nutritionist, Health Awareness Centre, anything cooked above118 degrees loses all its essential vitamins and minerals.
However, some manufacturers do replace the nutrients, so make sure that you only buy cans that have the nutrient value like the percentage of minerals, vitamins and proteins written on the back of the can.
No Fibre
Most canned fruits and vegetables lack the fibre that fresh fruits and vegetables provide. This is because most of the fibre in the fruit is present in the peel which is removed for canning.
Preservatives
Naini Setalvad, Nutritionist says, "The main reason canned fruits and vegetables should be avoided is because of the chemicals and preservatives that are added to them. This can result in degenerative diseases."
According to Jayamala, having canned fruits and veggies for a prolonged period of time can also lead to a toxic residue in your body.
Bhavya S.N, Nutritionist, St. John’s Hospital, Bangalore advices that if you are suffering from diabetes or hypertension, canned fruits and vegetables should be avoided as they have a high salt and sugar content.
Diet?
While fresh fruits and vegetables are great for a diet and helps shed that excess weight, the sugar and salt in canned fruits and vegetables can have the opposite effect on you.
