Actor Emraan Hashmi has for long been associated with a certain kind of cinema that spoke more about his skills as a ‘casanova’ and a ‘kisser’ than as an ‘actor’. But the Bollywood star’s now ready to ditch his lover-boy image and do more meaningful cinema. And by his own admission, the transition’s already begun.
“To a great extent, Once Upon a Time In Mumbai has helped me get away from the image that I’d earned with my past films and help me get the recognition as an actor,” says Emraan. And with Madhur Bhandarkar’s forthcoming comedy and Dibaker Banerjee’sShanghai, Emraan’s keen to reassert the change.
“I don’t regret doing any of my films that I’ve done in the past, but I do wish that films like the ones I am doing now had come a little earlier on in my career,” he adds. Looking back he explains that ‘being typecast in this image was not on my wish-list’. “It’s not what I’d hoped for. In fact, no actor would like to be typecast, but gradually, I’m glad people are accepting me for more than my image was made out to be,” he says.
His film with Madhur marks a foray into the comic genre for both the actor and the director. And though Emraan does admit to being a tad bit disappointed at being approached for a comedy and not the usual hard-hitting fare that Madhur’s usually associated with, he does reveal that he’s just glad being associated with ‘a filmmaker who brings more to screen than just entertainment’. And though playing a flirt in this film, Emraan reveals that it was a relief not being roped into a film to do the ‘kissing scenes’ alone. “I’ve had more than my share of onscreen kisses,” he laughs.
But his next film Murder 2 will see him do just that again? “Yes, but it’s nothing like Murder at all. It’s got a strong story line and absolutely new characters.” Will he miss his original heroine, Mallika Sherawat? “Definitely. I’ll miss Mallika. It’s hard to imagine a Murder without her, but Jacqueline is also someone to watch out for and I’m looking forward to working with her,” he signs off.
