Remember, how, some months back, there was news that the release of three big films - ’My Name Is Khan’, ’Kites’ and ’3 Idiots’ - had been postponed from 2009 to 2010? Then came news that ’3 Idiots’ would hit the screens this year itself, on 25th December.
And now comes the news that Rakesh Roshan’s ’Kites’ also just might make it to the cinemas this year. Of course, the final decision on the release date would be taken once Rakesh Roshan meets some studio heads in Los Angeles as he plans to release the film internationally, in non-traditional markets too. But tentatively, the release has been planned for 18th December. Isn’t Roshan concerned about another big film, ’3 Idiots’, coming just one week after his Kites? “Not really,” he says, adding, “We’ve had two big films releasing on the same day and both scoring.
In our case, there’s going to be at least a week’s gap between the two films.” Rakesh Roshan justifies his release date by explaining that both films would click if they are good, else, the better one would score over the weaker one. He recalls, “In 2000, when I was releasing Hrithik’s debut film, ’Kaho Naa…Pyaar Hai’, everybody in the trade warned me against being sandwiched between Aamir Khan’s ’Mela’ and Shah Rukh Khan’s ’Phir Bhi Dil Hai Hindustani’. But I went ahead and released ’Kaho Naa… Pyaar Hai’ on 14th January, a week after ’Mela’ (7th) and a week ahead of ’Phir Bhi Dil Hai Hindustani’ (21st). What I mean to say is that a good film will always work at the box-office, no matter what!”
